Los Angeles, 1999–2001
The Los Angeles series of drawings is the result of my aesthetic reflections on the city of Los Angeles, where I lived in 1999 and 2000, and about the vegetation and landscape of California, which at the time seemed completely alien to me. These collaged drawings are composed of different films and sheets of paper on which I drew. Various elements were assembled, collage-like, and reworked in three sequential steps: photocopies of details from the initial drawings were worked into the second group of drawings; set pieces from the latter were in turn incorporated into the third group and mounted in new configurations of paper and film. The drawings are based on individual elements, reworked in various ways and then sewn together. The technique of sewing made it possible to combine in a lasting way a wide variety of papers and films with distinct qualities. The drawings were conceived as models for large wall works, but they have yet to be realized. These early drafts retain their autonomous character as drawings.
